Immediate Dentures

This photograph shows how large your immediate denture will be including sockets that have been carved on the cast of the pre-existing extracted teeth

YOUR FIRST DENTURE MAY BE AN IMMEDIATE DENTURE:
After the remaining, unwanted have been removed, the dental appliance is pre-made and placed directly in numb and bloodied mouth. Eliminating the dreaded edentulous appearances in the public face. The other few positive factors that immediate denture can provide is that;
  • May help heal a little quicker
  • May helps keep extraction sites free from getting food and infectious material from reaching the susceptible open sockets
  • May help in reducing pain
  • May helps you to learn to get used and utilise the appliance a little earlier, rather than to wait for the healing time of the conventional format, where a patient would then be used to the emptiness of a totally edentulous mouth and would then obviously have to make the necessary feel and phonetic readjustments to speak, aesthetic facial changes and dramatic functional conformities to chew and eat as best possible.

IT IS PRUDENT TO ADVISE THAT PATIENTS THAT ELECT TO PURSUE THIS FORMAT WILL REQUIRE OTHER COSTLY PROCEDURES SUCH AS:

1st Temporary soft-liner reline (two to three weeks after dental appliance placement)
2nd Temporary soft-liner reline (4 to 6 months after dental appliance placement) AND A FINAL CUSTOM DENTURE (completed within 1 year)

Although some patients might be appropriate candidates for immediate dentures, its really only time and evidence that supplies the ultimate final answer for each individual. I, due to my personal accumulated experience, tend to dissuade my patients form entering such an immensely adorning process that in some cases be so overwhelming in terms of pain, anxiety and self-social segregation that the patient can become so fatigued that they may have a very negative approach to denture in the future. It is such a long lasting disadvantage that in my opinion should not be recommended in any way flippantly. Having said that though, if the patient has a great attitude and wants to win this huge battle of persistent pain and discomfort then they will defiantly conquer their arduous quest. It is these patients that would be defiantly successful, to wear this type of dental appliances immediately following the total or partial removal of the natural dentition. In any case what should be emphasised to the patient is that there will be a requirement for more costly adjustments such as internal relining reconstruction and time-consuming trips.

Before immediate dentures are placed in the mouth the dental appliances are constructed in advance enabling the practitioner to place the dental appliance directly after extraction. Impression or mould of the patient’s oral ridges and remaining dentition must be taken and a die stone cast made. The cast will have the dentition as is in the mouth and all the cast teeth removed in order for the dentures to be customized somewhat for the individual. During surgery, your mouth would have been numbed with local anaesthetic. Although this dental procedure is usually comfortable, it may be possible that a patient can feel a little anxious so relaxant may be given might cause sleepiness, so a carer or driver would be prudent.
