Preparing For Immediate Dentures

As expressed earlier immediate dental appliances are inserted immediately after the removal of the unwanted remaining teeth. Impressions and measurements are taken during the preliminary visit and then models of the patient's mouth and oral situation are cast and examined. For some people, the embarrassment of having to go without teeth while the gums are healing can be too burdensome. So therefore, this procedure can accommodate these types of patients.

Patients must remember, however that immediate dentures are designed and fabricated to fit the patient’s mouth with casts of the impressions taken at the with undisturbed and dentate mouth.

Patients must realise that after some time, approximately a few months, the gum tissues and underlying bones can alter dramatically. I have experienced with my patients massive shrinkage, especially in the first six months after the removal of teeth and during the healing period. As the natural shrinkage or gum resorption occurs, the appliances will necessitate refilling of the bases to restore a better fit once again. Due to the inability to try in the denture prior to extracting your teeth, it may be certain that aesthetic problems may arise. Although this is not thought to be a major problem and the aesthetic result will be adequate, the patient must be made aware that there is no control by any party involved including the patient themselves.

This procedure of inserting your new denture immediately after the extraction is sometimes thought to be a very unusual. However, it is a procedure we undertake quite often with patients that have the need. Often as mentioned swelling is expected, so inserting the dental appliance directly after may lessen the swelling a little. It is imperative to remember that If swelling occurs and the dental appliance are not covering the ridges it can be impossible to re-insert the appliance and the patient may have to wait for the swelling to subsides before refitting the dental appliance, which makes the whole concept insignificant. It is prudent that the patients follow instructions given by the dental and denture practitioner and undertake their following of procedure intensely and with care according to the suggestions made. The dental appliances must be kept in the mouth for at least tree full day and nights, after the insertion. Remember not to attempt to remove the dental appliance to minimise the swelling.

Sometimes immediate denture are assumed to be thought of as a waist of money, however it is far from the truth as they play a great role being required latter as a spare or emergency dental appliance. Extremely handy if a latter dental appliance should break or need to be sent for repair.
