Denture Repairs

The above photographs show that dental appliances and its dentition can chip or
break whilst eating or dropping due to heavy impact. Here we have two anterior teeth,
which have been broken due to a small fall in a porcelain sink whilst being cleaned. (Right:This photograph shows the excavated zones of the removed acrylics and broken teeth, and the new dentition replaced. )
There are several types of scenarios, which are associated with repairs. They involve
breakages of the pink acrylics on the base surfaces and/or the acrylic/porcelain
false dentition. In many cases, as the natural dentition progressively needs to be removed, additions are required to replace the extracted teeth and continue the occlusal or incisal table of the dental appliance. Either processes usually take one or two days, unless the required shape and colour of the replacement tooth needs to be ordered, where we would have to wait another day or two to receive the product.
Dental appliances are NOT indestructible
-
Dental appliances can break very easily if they’re not carefully looked after and treated right. (Apply as little force as possible whilst handling them)
-
It is common that some patients will attempt to repair a dental appliance with common super-glue, which has to be expressed as a highly toxic, carcinogen culminating to or a physiological problematic chemical. The contents of such a chemical include Cyanide Acrylate
-
Patients must NOT attempt to self repair the broken appliance as they can create further damage incurring more time for repair, of even a denture that may be obsolete.
-
Let’s admit it. Things break and crumble into piece at the worst time possible. Anytime a denture breaks is a bad time.
-
It’s extremely important that you do not, under any circumstance wear a broken denture. Broken dentures can cause tremendous pain and discomfort, which could ultimately lead to terrible infections.
-
It is common, that if the patient does not have a replacement appliance, then it is expected that the patient will be temporarily inconvenienced with the fact that they will be edentulous until such time that the broken appliance will be carefully fixed or replaced.
We as practitioners want to offer and supply you with as much help as we can when it comes to denture breakages or loss. We recommend to all our patients that purchasing an identical twin pair of dentures would greatly help the situation. This second pair would supply you with the comfort of knowing you have a back up if anything happens to the pair in use. It is crucial that if you go ahead and have a new dental appliance made that you retain the old appliance as a spare saving you from the expense of ordering a twin dental appliance.
