Denture Hygiene, Cleaning & Cleansers

When dental appliances are not worn and cared for as instructed by a dental prosthetist or a denture practitioner, many long-term problems may be inevitable. Special care is always necessary for dental appliances, and obviously, depending on what type of dental appliance the patient has, then specific care may be required. Your practitioner should give the patient, all the information needed with your dental appliance and the required care, such as, cleaning, sterilising, specific utilisation process and storing.

It’s highly recommended and expected that full and partial denture wearers clean and wash their teeth and their dentures as often as they can. When I say ‘as often as you can’, I’m really saying EVERYDAY. Bacteria can be found in any crevice, and it’s important that patients be made aware of this problem. The contact between a tooth and a denture is the home for bacteria and calculus. It’s crucial that you take the steps to ensure your oral hygiene is constantly monitored to prevent major infections and breath odours.

Dentures need to be bathed and washed in lukewarm or cold water. It is also extremely important that you use the correct utensils to carefully and thoroughly clean your dental appliance. The use of incorrect cleaning devices can lead to breakage or possible inefficient cleaning.

Many patients think that cleaning a dental appliance is a difficult, expensive and lengthy procedure. You will be surprised to know that in actual fact it’s a very simple process and requires very little time and little expenditure. Cleaning and washing your dental appliance is as straightforward as using a toothbrush and a typical liquid detergent. Sometimes the most simple methods and chemicals can lead to the most effective and impressive result. By using an ordinary toothbrush and small amounts of liquid detergent, you can be rest assured that it will not cause any damage or future problems to your dental appliance.

For patients out there that feel a toothbrush and liquid detergent is not enough, we also provide low-priced electronic denture sterilisers and dental cleaning products specifically manufactured and selected for your avail.
These products are accessible to each patient as a replacement to the usual technique of a toothbrush and liquid detergent.

To ensure you with healthy oral care, washing and cleaning your dental appliance straight after a meal will ultimately grant you a longer lasting dental appliance.

It’s best that the dental appliance is cleaned in a plastic contain to prevent brakeage if they’re accidentally dropped. It’s also suggested that a towel be used to ensure grip and less tension when holding them as well as placing a soft material at the base of your sink or simply filling the sink up with water to ensure the reduction of heavy contact if it were to slip out of the patients hand whilst cleaning.

When patients receive their completed and handcrafted dental appliances, they will notice the highly polished surface on the denture. It is vital for the patients to be informed of the importance of the polish existing. The polish that is evident on the dental appliances is to help prevent stains, tartar, and plaque accumulation. In some case, several toothpastes and other abrasive products can rapidly tear down the polished surface. However, It must be understood by the patients that, to maintain this polished surface there are a number amount of specific products on the market that are specially formulated to successfully and safely clean you dental appliances.

Some home ‘do-it-yourself’ methods are:
  •           Fill a container with half cool tap water and half vinegar. Give the cool tap water/vinegar combination a mix and then leave the dental appliances in the container for 20 – 30 minutes.
  •           Using a container, put 2 tablespoons of baking soda and a half a cup of cool tap water. Then leave your dental appliances in the container for 20 – 30 minutes.
  •           Put cool tap water and a denture cleaning solution (Efferdent or Polident) in a container and leave dental appliance in the container for 15 minutes. (Read back of the commercial product for further instructions)

Dentures need to be replaced at least every 5-6 years to ensure a health oral hygiene. Just like your toothbrush, a pair of socks and even your windscreen wipers, your dental appliance too, have an expire date. If you’re a denture wearer, dentures are an essential part of your life. They are needed everyday and they are used everyday.

Dental appliances should be replaced at least every 5-6 years. This is because:

  •             Your mouth size, shape and dimensions are constantly changing. It is important that you allow your mouth to undergo these changes without any interference. Your dental appliances do not grow and change with your mouth structure.
  •            A dental appliance can only with hold it functional dimensions for a certain period of time.
